Raise Awareness of How We Can End Homelessness in Our Community
* Open to all K - 12 students in Palm Beach County registered to participate in SleepOut 2012 as an individual or as part of a team (registration fee of $25 is waived for all contest participants).

  • Three winners from each grade level category of K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12 will be selected and notified prior to April 20, 2012.

  • First place winners will be asked to read their winning essay or poem at the SleepOut event on Friday, April 20, 2012, between 7 pm and 9 pm and drawings will be displayed.

  • 1st, 2nd, 3rd place CASH prizes will be awarded.
The purpose of this essay, poetry and drawing contest it to educate elementary, middle school, and high school students about the most vulnerable and neglected individuals in Palm Beach County, as well as to help these students develop a sense of compassion and personal responsibility towards serving others.

English-Speaking Union Essay Contest

The Palm Beach Branch of the English-Speaking Union is pleased to announce the topic for the 2012 Essay Contest which is open to all high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. Winning essays will be announced at the end of March and winners and their teachers will be invited to read their essays at the annual meeting of the English Speaking Union in April at the Beach Club in Palm Beach. Winners will receive cash prizes at this event.

The essay topic for 2012 is as follows:

Choose a character from a play or novel who experiences a moral dilemma. Identify the dilemma, discuss the consequences of this character’s choice, and relate the outcome to the overall meaning of the novel.

Write a 500 to 600 word essay on this topic. Essays will be judged for content, style, and intellectual perception.

We ask that schools who enter the contest screen and select a total of three essays from each school for submission to the ESU essay committee.

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMITTED ESSAYS
  1. Please send 5 copies of each essay typed and double spaced.
  2. Include a title page (only 1 per essay) identifying the student, grade level, the school, teacher in charge, title of the work of literature, author, and title of the essay. Paper clip the title page to the essays. Please do not put the student’s name on the essay.
  3. All entries must be submitted through the school.
  4. Entries will not be returned.
  5. Entries must be postmarked by March 16, 2012, and mailed to:

Essay contest awards will be made at the Annual Meeting of the English-Speaking Union in April. Monetary prizes will be awarded for first, second, and third place in the 11th and 12th grade; one prize will be awarded for the tenth grade.

This contest is open only to students of Palm Beach County Schools, public or private, including home-schooled students.

DEADLINE: Postmark, 04/30/12.

Poetry: Any form, 40 line limit. Open to grades 9 — 12 only.
There is NO ENTRY FEE.
There will be Cash Prizes and Honorable Mentions awarded. The winning poems will be published in our 2012 Anthology. The winners will be given a free membership for the remainder of 2012.

RULES:
1) Entries must be typed, computer-generated or Xeroxed on one side of 8 1/2 X 11 paper, single or double-spaced. No artwork or fancy fonts.
2) Send 1 copy of each poem. Only ONE poem per page. Each poem must have a TITLE. Put school name and grade level on each poem upper left. On the upper right, show student’s name, address, telephone number and e-mail.
3) Keep copies of your poems. None will be returned.
4) You may submit up to five poems, but they should all be sent in the same envelope.
5) Poems that have previously won awards in our contest may not be submitted.
ENTRIES WILL BE DISQUALIFIED IF ALL RULES ARE NOT FOLLOWED
JUDGING: Members of the Board of The Poets will judge the student contest.
Results will be announced and prizes awarded on Sunday, May 20, 2012 at the 3rd Sunday Reading, at 2PM.
